There are three main types of fence stains that are classified by their opacity, or how much of the wood's natural grain they allow to show through.

Transparent / Clear: These stains contain little to no pigment, allowing the natural color and grain of the wood to be fully visible. They primarily offer a protective seal against moisture and UV damage, making them ideal for new or high-quality wood where the natural beauty is the main feature.

Semi-Transparent: This type of stain provides a good balance between color and visibility. Solid: As the name suggests, a solid stain provides a thick, opaque, and paint-like finish. It completely covers the wood grain and any imperfections.
